COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course discusses lifestyle changes at home and in the work place that improves grip strength and flexibility during repetitive instrumentation.  Treatments incorporating hydrotherapy and exercise to improve circulation to the extremities of the hands are reviewed.  The audience is engaged in hands on activities that will be positive life-long habits resulting in reduced stress and strain to hands and wrists.

 

OBJECTIVES

 Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

1.       List therapies to improve circulation to digits improving comfort and mobility.

2.       Define muscle spacisticity and how it relates to muscle groups of the hands and wrists.

3.       Describe range of motion exercises and hydrotherapy that can enhance endurance and preserve grip strength and stretching of muscles and joints.

4.       Understand the amount of force reduced to finger tips when proper instruments and ergonomics are used during instrumentation.

5.       List the signs of fatigue that occurs from repetitive finger motion.

6.       Identify procedures performed at home and in the workplace that reduce stress on muscle groups used during instrumentation.

SPEAKER

Sharri Crowe, RDH, BSDH, MS

Sharri received certification in dental hygiene from Loyola University in 1984, completed her Bachelor’s Degree in dental hygiene from Northwestern University in 1986 and completed her Master’s Degree from Silver Lake College in 2002.  An ADHA member and active member of Fox Valley Dental Hygiene Association, Sharri is currently employed as a part–time dental hygienist for Fox Cities Community Dental Clinic and part- time dental hygiene faculty member at Fox Valley Technical College in Wisconsin. She is a freelance writer for the American Dental Institute for Continuing Education, current president of Fox Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association, and participates in numerous community activities promoting dental health.

 Sealant Clinics for 2nd graders 2009-2010



    Here is a brief summary of our 13 years of the Sealant Program.   

        1998-Sealed 12 children at Hamilton, our pilot school, gradually expanded to 5 La Crosse Schools

        2000-added Bangor School

        2006-expanded to all 10 LaCrosse Elementary Schools and increased participation of Western dental hygiene students

        2008-09 school year-sealed 175 LaCrosse children and 21 Bangor children=196 total  !

 

Grand totals since 1998----sealed 960 La Crosse children and 147 Bangor children.   1107 total

  Grand total of 3315 sealed teeth.  At an average fee of $30 per sealant, that represents $99,450 worth of free care!

        THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE HELPED IMPROVE THE ORAL HEALTH OF OUR LOCAL CHILDREN!!!

 

So here are the dates for next semester:

 March 5, 2010, Hintgen, 8:00 a.m., we need 2 hygienists and dentist

March 26, 2010, Southern Bluffs, 8:30 a.m.      need 6 hygienists and dentist. 

    Neither I nor the dental hygiene students are available this day because we are hosting the state senior dental hygiene conference at Western.

    We will have the equipment all set up and Heather Suby and Tracy Kayser will oversee the day.  Lorie Gerard is signed up so we still need  at least 3 more volunteers.

 The Bangor date will probably be in April, but has not been determined yet.
